ThisspecificationcoversallthecurrentlyactiveAmericanPetroleumInstitute(API)engineoilperformancecategoriesthathavebeendefinedinaccordancewiththeASTMconsensusprocess.ThereareorganizationswithspecificationsnotsubjecttotheASTMconsensusprocess,suchastheInternationalLubricantStandardizationandApprovalCommittee(ILSAC),AmericanPetroleumInstitute(API–SMSpecification),andtheAssociationdesConstructeursEuropeansd’Automobiles(ACEA).Certainofthesespecifications,whichhavebeendefinedprimarilybytheuseofcurrentASTMtestmethods,havealsobeenincludedintheAppendixofthisdocumentforinformation.IntheASTMsystem,aspecificAPIdesignationisassignedtoeachcategory.Thesystemisopen-ended,thatis,newdesignationsareassignedforusewithnewcategoriesaseachnewsetofoilperformancecharacteristicsaredefined.Oilcategoriesmaybereferencedbyenginebuildersinmakinglubricantrecommendations,andusedbylubricantsuppliersandcustomersinidentifyingproductsforspecificapplications.Whereapplicable,candidateoilprogramsareconductedinaccordancewiththeAmericanChemistryCouncil(ACC)PetroleumAdditivesProductApprovalCodeofPractice.
